Supporting Smooth Transitions to School

Transitioning to school is a significant milestone for children and their families, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in their educational journey.

At Toongabbie West Public School, we are dedicated to ensuring successful transitions by fostering meaningful communication with our wider school community. During Kindergarten Orientation, we offer play-based sessions designed to give pre-Kindergarten children the chance to make friends and establish positive relationships with their teachers.

We also organise informative sessions for parents and carers, providing a valuable opportunity to ask questions, gain insight into the school environment, and learn how to best support their children at home. To ensure every family's voice is heard, we encourage feedback through surveys and informal conversations during drop-off and pick-up times.

Additionally, Toongabbie West PS actively collaborates with local early childhood education centres to create joint activities and initiatives that further support children's smooth transitions.

Supporting Smooth Transitions Year-to-Year

Recognising that transition moments happen beyond Kindergarten, our School Chaplain works closely with Year 2 students in Term 4. These sessions focus on building resilience and communication skills, which are essential as students prepare to enter Year 3.

We also acknowledge that the anticipation of normal grade and class movements in the new year can be difficult for some students. Classroom teachers and the Learning and Support Team collaborate to provide additional transition support for these students as the end of the year approaches. This often is in the form of the development of personalised social narratives or visits to a class of the grade above for a taster lesson.

High School Transition Support

Preparing for high school is a critical phase for students and their families. Toongabbie West PS is committed to supporting students as they make this important step. We work closely with local high schools to ensure a seamless transition by coordinating orientation days, information sessions, and visits that familiarise students with their new environment.

We provide tailored support programs that help Year 6 students develop the skills and confidence needed for success in high school, including organisational strategies, time management, and social-emotional skills.

By partnering with families and neighbouring schools, we strive to create a connected and supportive pathway that sets every student up for success in their educational journey beyond primary school.
